Sankranti rush has started in Andhra Pradesh. There was a buzz in the palaces with muggles, gobbemmas, Haridasu kirtans and the playing of Gangireddu. Moreover, fairs are also held in many temples. Continuing the tradition of Sankranti, the Pongallu ceremony is being held grandly at the Sanjeevaraya Swamy Temple in Kadapa district on Sunday. It is customary here for men to offer Pongal to the Lord on the Sunday before Sankranti every year.
Sanjeevaraya Swami Pongallu celebration is being held in grand style in Tippayapalle of Pullampeta mandal. For these celebrations, men who have settled in different states and countries by profession who have reached their hometown are offering Pongal along with the locals. Pongals are being offered to the lord. Devotees worship Anjaneyaswamy here as Sanjeevaraya Swamy. It is special here that only men offer Pongal to Sanjeevaraya Swamy. Women are not allowed to enter this temple. The specialty here is that only men enter the temple and cook the pongal themselves and offer offerings to the lord. Women are also forbidden to eat Swami’s offerings.

There used to be an old monk who used to roam around in the village of Tippaya and he did not eat the food given by women. But that monk installed the idol of Anjaneyaswami in that village and left the village naming it as Sanjeevaraya Swamy. But while going.. he suggested to build only walls on four sides instead of building a temple gopuram where the statue is. Moreover, in the case of pongal box, only men should present to the Lord. Since then, the tradition has been continued.
