Vinesh Phogat: Amid the ongoing controversy over the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), female wrestler Vinesh Phogat has made a key statement. Vinesh Phogat wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She announced that she is returning Khel Ratna Award, Arjun Award. Before Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia also announced to return the Padma Shri award.
Vinesh Phogat wrote in his open letter that Prime Minister Sakshi Malik gave up wrestling and returned Bajrang Punia Padma Shri. Vinesh Phogat wrote that receiving this award was a dream and now I want to get rid of the image of Vinesh because what is happening to us is a reality. Major Dhyan Chand gave me Khel Ratna and Arjun awards. But, they don’t make sense. Every woman wants to live with dignity. Hence, I am returning my awards so that they do not burden us.
Wrestlers have been protesting for a long time.

It is known that many wrestlers including Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat have been in controversy for a long time against former president of the Wrestling Association of India Brij Bhushan Singh. First Brijbhushan Singh was removed from WFI. Later when the committee was re-elected, Sanjay Singh was elected as the president. Who is close to Brij Bhushan Singh? All the wrestlers protested openly even after this election.
After the protest by the wrestlers, the sports ministry dissolved the new committee. The entire committee including Sanjay Singh was dismissed. The sports ministry said that the new committee will have to function as per the rules, the stamp of the old committee will not be visible on the new committee and the same people against whom the allegations have been made cannot run the committee. Wrestlers welcomed the removal of the new committee. However, despite all this, wrestlers continued to withdraw their awards.
