The Telangana High Court has made it clear that there should be no gender discrimination at places of worship and that all men and women are equal before God. In a series of judgments given by courts allowing women to enter Shani Singanapur, Haji Ali Dargah and Sabarimala Temple, the State High Court has issued a sensational verdict regarding Muslim women. It has issued an interim order directing the Waqf Board to allow women in mosques, congregations and prayer halls. Asma Fatima, secretary of Shia Imamia Itna Asari Akbari Society, Anjuman A Alawi, has filed a petition challenging the non-permission of Shia Muslim women to pray in mosques, congregations and other holy places. Justice Nagesh Bhimapaka took up the inquiry on Monday. The senior counsel on behalf of the petitioner argued that the Mutawalis Committee does not allow only women belonging to the Shia tribe. He said that although petitions were given to the Waqf Board to allow women to enter the prayer halls, they did not respond.
The counsel for the Waqf Board argued that according to the Quran, anyone is allowed to enter the prayer halls. Responding to this, the judge said that it is not appropriate to discriminate against women and the constitution has given them equal rights. It is clear that the rights provided by the constitution cannot be taken away. On this occasion, the judge read out various topics from the Quran, Bible, Torah, Bhagavad Gita, Autobiography of a Yogi, etc. Women were blamed for not being allowed to pray. He said that discrimination against women is not appropriate and the rights provided by the constitution should not be written down. An interim order was issued directing the Mutawali Committee to allow Shia women in the synagogues. It has been clarified that women can freely go to places of worship and pray except on certain days. To this extent, High Court Judge Justice Nagesh Bhimapaka issued an interim order on Monday. The hearing was adjourned by directing the Waqf Board to file a counter with full details of the reasons for banning women.
