Champions Trophy 2025: There has been a lot of controversy between India and Pakistan regarding the hosting of Asia Cup 2023. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has refused to send Team India to Pakistan. After that only a few matches of the tournament were played in Pakistan. And now the blue clouds have started gathering over Champions Trophy 2025. Because the Champions Trophy is to be held in Pakistan. The question still remains whether Team India will go to Pakistan for this or not. Or will the hosting of the tournament slip away to Pakistan? Now there is a big news from ICC in this regard.
Pakistan and ICC have signed a hosting agreement for the Champions Trophy. Pakistan Cricket Board has released a press release to this effect. In a press release, the PCB said the ‘Hosting Rights Agreement’ was signed between Board Chairman Zaka Ashraf and ICC General Counsel Jonathan Hall at the ICC headquarters in Dubai. This means that the rights to host the Champions Trophy have now legally gone to the Pakistan board.
What does contract mean?
With this agreement, it has been decided that the tournament to be held in 2025 will be hosted by Pakistan. The PCB said that the board has asked the government of Pakistan to provide security to the foreign teams coming to the tournament. It was also mentioned that Pakistan’s Acting Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq had assured the board that all security agencies would provide full cooperation in organizing the tournament.
Will Team India go to Pakistan?
Now a big question has arisen from this agreement. Will the Indian team also go to Pakistan and play the Champions Trophy? There is no hope that this will be answered soon. However, a few days ago, citing BCCI sources, the board would not send the team to Pakistan for the tournament. He also said that if there is no change in the policies of the Indian government regarding Pakistan, the same situation will continue.
And how will the Champions Trophy be held?
Then the Indian team will not participate in this tournament? Or will Pakistan lose hosting rights due to India’s opposition? Not sure how to interpret this. The signing of the agreement between PCB and ICC made it clear that the hosting of the tournament would remain with Pakistan. However, this does not mean that this tournament should be held only in Pakistan.
In case of opposition from India, the tournament can be held in any other country. Only the PCB’s share of the hosting rights and revenues from the same will remain intact. This may be as seen in Asia Cup 2023. It is known that some matches were held here in Pakistan. However, all the other matches including the finals of Team India were played in Sri Lanka.
