Indian Hockey team for South Africa Tour: Hockey India on Wednesday announced the 26-member Indian squad for the 4-nation tournament to be held in South Africa from January 22. Young players who are performing at the junior level are also given a chance in the team. Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist India will face France, Netherlands and hosts South Africa in this tournament, which is considered to be crucial for the preparation of the Paris Olympics.

Harmanpreet Singh has been handed over the captaincy of the Indian team for the tour of South Africa. FIH Player of the Year Award winner Hardik Singh will act as the vice-captain. Youngsters Arijit Singh Hundal and Bobby Singh Dhami, who have performed brilliantly at the junior level, will be playing at the senior level for the first time. Along with Krishna Pathak and PR Sreejesh, Pawan was given a chance in goal keeping. Veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh, who was on break from the last tournament, is also back.

Speaking about the tour, Indian team head coach Craig Fulton said, ‘We are very excited to start the Olympic season with the South Africa tour. You will get a chance to play against the best teams there. We have selected a big team. So that all the players get a chance. Before the FIH Pro League, I could see everyone playing in match conditions. Two junior players were also selected. The Indian team will play France on January 22 and 24 (starting at 2.30 pm), South Africa on January 26 (starting at 9.30 pm) and Netherlands on January 28 (starting at 2 pm).
