Municipal workers have been on strike for a week
Sanitation workers across AP went on an indefinite strike from December 26. Sanitation, engineering contract staff and outsourcing staff are participating in this strike. With that, sanitation management became chaotic. Sanitation workers are inclined to fulfill their demands at a time when corona cases are on the rise. As it is the season of infectious diseases, the pressure on the AP government is increasing day by day. They are striking for 13 demands, including equal pay for equal work and regularization of outsourcing workers. Similar to Anganwadi Sanghas, the first round of negotiations with representatives of municipal labor unions failed. With that, the AP government once again called the representatives of the sanitation trade unions for talks.
Sanitation workers are demanding to implement the promises made by Chief Minister Jagan before the election. They are demanding equal pay for equal work and increase the salary to 26 thousand rupees. Presently they are giving a salary of Rs.15 thousand. They allege that the government is ignoring the demand to increase the number of workers due to work pressure and health problems. On the other hand, the sanitation workers went on strike to fulfill their demand for salary increase. The opposition TDP has extended its support to the municipal workers’ strike. Chandrababu and Nara Lokesh have already promised that once they come to power, they will fulfill many demands including wage hike of Anganwadis, volunteers and municipal workers.
