You cannot see the contact details of people you add with the help of your username. That means you will not see their mobile number. Currently this feature is only available for web beta users. Earlier this feature was also seen by Android beta testers. Telegram already has this kind of feature. Telegram does not require a number to chat with each other. Just a username is enough.
Information about this update was shared by Wabetainfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp development. Apart from just the username feature, WhatsApp is also working on status updates, dark interface for web users. Soon web users will be able to share status updates directly from their laptop or desktop without mobile. Apart from media you can also post text status.
WhatsApp username feature helps in improving people’s privacy. The username feature works like other social media apps. Each person has a unique username. You can also change your username according to the website. But the time limit for this is not yet known. That means you have time to change the username in other apps. Once your username is set it can only be changed after a certain period of time. It remains to be seen whether similar things will happen in WhatsApp too.
