Sports Ministry has taken a sensational decision. The ministry has suspended the newly elected wrestling association under the leadership of Sanjay Singh. Sanjay Singh, who is close to BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh, was elected as the president of the wrestling association on Thursday. 40 votes to 47 votes were received in the election to the wrestling association. His opponent, Commonwealth Games gold medalist Anita Sheron, got just 7 votes. Anita has the support of wrestlers who accused Brij Bhushan of sexual harassment. Sanjay Singh was previously the Vice President of Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association. He continued as a member of WFI’s last Executive Council from 2019.
A new wrestling association has recently announced that the Junior National Championship will be held in Gonda. The sports ministry said the decision was taken without following the provisions of the WFI constitution. The Sports Ministry said in a statement that the decisions taken by the newly elected executive body of the WFI violate the provisions of the WFI and the National Sports Development Code. Such decisions are taken by the Executive Committee. Before that, the agenda needs to be considered. The new president’s unilateralism is seen in these decisions which are against the rules. It is against this backdrop that the Union Sports Ministry took a decision to cancel the new working group of the Federation.
The new wrestling association is fully controlled by the previous office bearers, who have been accused of sexual harassment in the past. Completely disregarded the sporting code. Not only this, the ministry said the federal function is being run from premises controlled by former office bearers. As such, there have been allegations of sexual harassment against athletes at the complex. The court is currently hearing the case.
On the other hand, Bajrang Punia decided to return his Padma Shri in protest against Sanjay Singh becoming President. He also wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat were among the wrestlers who fought Brij Bhushan. Led by these three wrestlers, many wrestlers protested against Brij Bhushan at Jantar Mantar.
These wrestlers accused Brij Bhushan of sexually harassing women wrestlers. Delhi Police has also registered an FIR on this matter. The wrestlers ended their performance after the sports ministry intervened. The Sports Ministry has disbanded the entire unit of the Wrestling Association. Later, wrestling association elections were held. The sports ministry has assured the players that no one from Brij Bhushan’s family will contest the elections.
