Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy has made it clear that those who have committed corruption and misappropriated public money will not be spared. Minister Uttam briefly explained the situation in the Civil Supplies Department and the status of irrigation projects in the state during the discussion on ‘Telangana State Finances – White Paper’ in the Telangana Legislative Assembly. He said that the Congress government will not ignore the corrupt people under any circumstances.
Uttamkumar Reddy, who accused the Civil Supplies Corporation of getting into a large amount of debt during the previous BRS regime, said that due to the negligence of the previous governments, the corporation incurred debts of more than Rs.56 thousand crores. It has been revealed that there has been a loss of more than Rs.11 thousand crores. He emphasized that the corporation was burdened with bad debts with annual interest of more than Rs.3 thousand crores. It has been clarified that about 95 lakh metric tonnes of rice worth Rs.22,000 crore belonging to the corporation is still with the millers without adequate security and bank guarantee. Additionally, 70-75% of rice is allegedly diverted to ration card holders. Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy said that the current situation has arisen due to the systemic errors of the previous regime.
It has been announced that the state government will conduct an inquiry into the collapse of the Medigadda barrage and ensure that those responsible are punished. He declared that the new Ayakattu would be very little, despite the substantial expenditure incurred on these projects by borrowing at high interest. He pointed out that despite the investment of one lakh crore rupees for the Kaleshwaram project, the newly formed ayakattu is only 1.5 lakh acres, Palamuru Rangareddy has spent Rs.25 thousand crores and has zero acreage, Sitarama Sagar has spent Rs.7500 crores and has zero ayakattu.
Regarding the Medigadda incident, he said that the poorly designed and constructed barrage collapsed on October 21 when the BRS was in power. It is said to be the first instance of a barrage collapsing in the country after spending thousands of crores. Without serious investigation, a pillar of Block No. 7 suddenly collapsed and sank to a depth of about 5 feet, he said. Minister Uttam said that the L&T company had faulty design and lack of geographical checks.
Addressing BRS MLA and former minister Harish Rao in the Legislative Assembly, Uttam Kumar Reddy pointed out the cracks in the Annaram and Sundella projects and emphasized the need for repairs. He criticized the ad hoc decisions taken by the previous government for lack of accountability and record keeping. He assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted in all aspects and strict action will be taken.
Earlier, during the speech of BRS MLA Harish Rao, Uttam Kumar Reddy intervened and clarified the issue of meters for agricultural connections. As a member of the Parliamentary Panel on Energy, he rejected the claims of collecting bills from farmers through the proposed meters and accused BRS of misleading the farmers on this matter.
