Star pacer Mohammad Shami played a key role in making India reach the final by picking up wickets in the ODI World Cup. Despite playing only 7 matches, he took a total of 24 wickets at an average of 10.70 and became the highest wicket-taker in the World Cup tournament. With this, Shami is being praised everywhere. Mohammed Shami was nominated for the country’s prestigious sports honor Arjuna Award in recognition of his outstanding performance in the World Cup. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has proposed the name of Team India pacer Mohammed Shami for the Arjuna Award. According to a report carried by PTI quoting ministry sources, Mohammed Shami’s name was initially absent from the list of nominees for the country’s second highest sporting honour. However, the BCCI has made a special appeal to the Sports Ministry to consider the name of Team India’s senior bowler in the Arjuna Award nominations. With this, it is reported that Mohammed Shami’s name will join the Arjuna Award race.
Earlier in 2021, Team India cricketer Shikhar Dhawan was selected for Arjuna Award. Also, Virat Kohli (2013), Rohit Sharma (2015), Ravichandran Ashwin (2014), Ravindra Jadeja (2019) are among the winners of the Arjuna Award. Mohammad Shami is away from the Indian team after the World Cup. Soon he will enter the team again with the Test series against South Africa. Despite doubts over his fitness, Shami is almost certain to play in the 2-match series starting from December 26. Along with Shami, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will join the squad for the Test series against South Africa.
