Free travel facility for women in RTC. This is also one of the six guarantees given by the Congress to the people of Telangana. This guarantee will come into effect from 9th of this month (tomorrow). A decision has also been taken in the cabinet. The Congress government, which had said that it would implement all six guarantees within 100 days, is implementing two guarantees first. Arogyasree limit hike is one of these, while free travel for women is another major guarantee.
Like this in Karnataka..
Congress came to power by announcing similar guarantees in Karnataka before Telangana. Congress also implemented the scheme of free travel for women there. Although it was a bit difficult at first.. later everything was fine. The Karnataka government has allowed free travel for women in buses since June this year. Karnataka has a total of 22 thousand buses. There is a free travel option for women only in ordinary and express buses. Before the implementation of this scheme, on an average 60 percent men were traveling in Karnataka buses and 40 percent were women. This ratio changed after the implementation of the free travel scheme. The number of women has increased significantly. Currently, 55 percent of women are traveling in the buses, while the number of men has naturally dropped to 45 percent. Mostly women board buses. Only local women from Karnataka have the opportunity to travel in those buses for free. This facility is available only in buses plying in Karnataka state. There is no free travel for women on inter-state services.
How in Telangana..?
This scheme will be implemented in Telangana from tomorrow. Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu gave details about this scheme after the cabinet meeting. He said that from 9th of this month, women can travel in buses for free by showing their identity card. Women can travel in buses for free by showing Aadhaar card or other cards. The procedures will be finalized shortly.
Why identity cards for women?
Especially this scheme was introduced for women in that state. That is why they are asking for identity cards to see the locality. It is said that those who have identity cards of other states will not be able to travel on Telangana state services. As of now RTC has not issued any statement regarding the rules. If the RTC discloses the complete details and rules, there is a chance that everyone will be aware of this scheme.
What are the hardships?
Free travel in buses for women means that it will immediately affect the RTC as well as autovalas. Till now all those who have traveled by autos will wait for the RTC bus. They want RTC journey even if it is a bit late. This means that indirectly the autowalas will have to suffer. This problem also started in Karnataka. However, the loss was partially offset by the fact that men were more likely to ride in autos instead of women. A similar problem is now coming to the fore in Telangana too. We have to wait and see what steps the government will take for this.
Loss to RTC..
Until now women used to buy tickets to travel, now they don’t buy tickets. If more women fill the bus, there will be no place for men. This means that women’s journeys will increase and men’s tickets will automatically decrease. Hence RTC will suffer loss. The government will have to bear this. If the government helps the RTC by bearing these expenses every month, the scheme will be implemented smoothly. Wherever there is a difference, this scheme is absurd.
