Our party gives a lot of importance to women and there are no political parties in that constituency that can say that we are the party that works for the advancement of women. In another constituency, there is no situation where a woman has been given a seat. Even though seven decades have passed since the formation of assembly constituencies, it is surprising that not a single woman has been represented as a legislator from those two key constituencies in Uttar Andhra. It has become interesting that even though the votes of women are more than those of men there, they have not stepped into the legislature even once. Saluru and Bobbili constituencies in Vizianagaram district were formed as legislative constituencies in 1951. So far, assembly elections have been held in these two constituencies fifteen times and so far not a single woman has won the election and entered the assembly.
Gummadi Sandhyarani once contested from Salur in 2009 but failed to enter the assembly after losing. The same situation is seen in the Bobbili assembly constituency which has a long history. Moreover, not a single political party has given a ticket to a woman from here. It is remarkable that not a single woman contested even as an independent. In 1951, when the Saluru Assembly Constituency was formed, for the first time in that election Kummishetti Venkatanarayana Dora was elected as an MLA from the Krishikar Lok Party and went to the Assembly. Since then till the 2019 elections, a total of fifteen elections have been held. 15 times men entered the assembly as legislators.
There are about one lakh women voters in this constituency, which has a majority of ST social class. So far, not a single woman from here has entered the legislative assembly, and the women’s association leaders complain that there is no opportunity to voice their problems in the legislatures. On the other hand, the same situation is seen in Bobbili. Bobbili constituency was formed in 1952 and 15 elections were held here too and 15 times men went to the assembly. There are more than one lakh women voters in this constituency which has two lakh and twenty thousand voters. No political party has given priority to women in this constituency, which once had the Bobbili Sansthan, which was big for women. The women are expressing their grievances that they have not been given tickets to contest in the legislative elections. However, the fact that women have not entered the assembly in these two constituencies has led to a new debate in the district.
