Hyderabad, March 25: Cybercriminals posing as Mumbai police threatened a woman and without her knowledge she withdrew Rs. 98 thousand was paid. According to the Madhuranagar police report in Hyderabad, Pulugurthi Shefali (25), a resident of GHMC’s 19th circle, Vengalaraonagar division, received a phone call in the name of a FedEx courier on March 21. They introduced themselves as Narcotics Bureau police. They said that the package was booked from Mumbai to Iran on her Aadhaar card and phone number. They said that the package contained 50 LSD strips and other drug related items. Shefali got scared and said that she was in Hyderabad and she did not send the package. But they did not listen. With this, the call was transferred to another person saying that they were transferring the call to the Mumbai police. The man introduced himself as the Mumbai Narcotics Police and suggested that they should interrogate her and install the Skype app on her phone.
Accordingly, after installing the app, a person in police uniform appeared in the video call. The background behind them also looked like a police station, so the victim thought they were real policemen. He then asked her to show her Aadhaar card. Later, he scared her by saying that her Aadhaar card was linked to the accounts of various terrorists. Her personal details were collected for about 3 hours. Cyber crooks threatened to log into her bank account and took screen sharing of her phone. 3,40,000 was taken without her knowledge through the Insta Personal app. They said that they are sending Rs.3,40,000 to her account and that money should be transferred in installments back to the account indicated by them.
As they said, they first transferred Rs.98 thousand. After trying to do the transaction, the payment stopped. If he told the same thing to the cyber criminal, he threatened to take money from his friends and send it. Meanwhile she got suspicious and cut the call. When she checked her account, she realized that she had taken Rs.3,40,000 from her bank account without her knowledge and was sending the same to them. A complaint was immediately lodged at the Madhuranagar police station.. the police registered a case and started an investigation.
