A Nepali young cricketer has received a huge blow in the case of rape of a minor girl. Sandeep Lamichhane was found guilty in this case and sentenced to 8 years in prison. Sandeep was sentenced by the Kathmandu District Court on Thursday (January 11). In addition to the sentence, the court ordered Sandeep to pay a fine of Rs 3 lakh. In this judgment, the court indicated that the victim will have to pay 2 lakh rupees (1.24 lakhs in Indian currency). But Lamichon was not in court when the verdict was announced, so he has not yet been arrested. Sandeep’s lawyer Saroj Ghimire said that they will appeal the decision in the High Court after the verdict. Going into the details of the case, a 17-year-old girl alleged that Sandeep raped her in a hotel room in Kathmandu in August 2022. Due to this, Sandeep was arrested. In January 2023, Sandeep came out of jail after the court granted bail.
Sandeep came out on bail and started playing again for the Nepali team. But within a few days, the court found Sandeep guilty in the rape case. Lamichhan’s bank account and assets were seized after the charge sheet was submitted. Sandeep played for the Under-19 World Cup team for the first time in 2016. He also played IPL for two years. He represented Delhi Capitals in the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Sandeep played 51 ODI matches for Nepal and took 112 wickets. He took 98 wickets for Nepal in 20 T20 matches. Apart from this, Sandeep Lamichane also played in mega cricket tournaments like Big Bash League and CPIL. Sandeep’s cricket career became questionable due to jail sentence. There are opinions that his career is over.
